Colorado Wildlife On The Move

Critter Crossings: Keeping Us Safe and Wildlife Alive

SREP is providing support to our friends at Felsburg, Holt & Ullevig (FHU) to reach out to school children about wildlife on the move. For the first time this year, FHU hosted the Critter Crossings: Keeping Us Safe and Wildlife Alive poster contest. The presentation organizers, FHU environmental scientists, were excited to host a contest similar to the Bridging Futures Contest in Washington, but at a much smaller scale.

Over 80 sixth-grade students at Hackberry Elementary School in Arvada were given the opportunity to design a unique poster to raise awareness about the issue of roads and wildlife and the engineering solutions available to help alleviate the problem.

Presentations stress the importance of including science and math in future education choices, and explore what transportation engineers and scientists do in the real world. The primary topic discussed with the students was about the effects of transportation projects on wildlife and habitat. FHU staff stress the importance of the collaborative effort between engineers, scientists, and planners and how working together to develop solutions can improve human safety and protect wildlife at the same time.

This year as part of the presentation FHU included a poster exhibition for students to artistically showcase what they learned from the presentation. The posters were displayed in the FHU office and the FHU staff ‘judged’ the posters for creativity in communicating the conflict between roads and wildlife, uniquely depicting wildlife crossings or other possible solutions, and/or demonstrating the importance of wildlife research and monitoring.

Seven participants were selected to have their posters displayed on the SREP website and the American Council of Engineering Companies website and were recognized at a special classroom awards ceremony. All participants were also entered into a raffle for prizes that were generously donated from the Denver Museum of Nature and Science, IMAX, and the Denver Zoo!

Congratulation students – we think you did an impressive job and we thank you for making this event a success!
